When’s the last time you really enjoyed something? What was it exactly? What did you enjoy about it? How do you know you enjoyed it?
Although i’m no licensed therapist, I believe reflection can unearth some very profound things hiding in every moment.
Recently, I found myself sitting with my brother playing the new ‘Call of Duty’. Yo that game was tough I admit. My patience was TESTED. There were moments when I had to take a breather cause I was cussing at the screen🤦🏽♂️ I mean back in the day my COD skills were up there, that was ten years ago so now I’m a little rusty. OK, maybe even considered a “noob”. But hey, I lived my glory days so not trippin.
After a solid hour of unfairly getting smacked left and right by these pro level pre-teens, it was time to tap out. Nowadays I don’t game, not because i’m “too busy” but more cause it doesn’t itch that scratch like it used to for me and also cause it’s borderline embarrassing to be the worst person on your squad; and luckily that’s what I noticed about myself.
My aim wasn’t to hop on the game to get highest score and rank up, it was to spend time with my younger bro; to get passionate and yell at the screen with him, experience losing together and rejoice victoriously around our occasional W.
Thats what I enjoyed. Our moment.
With each cluster of moments that pass over time, my sense of joy gets a little more nuanced. A little more intentional and on purpose. A little more me.
For me it’s the moments within each activity, or the moments with a person; not so much the activity or result, that yields joy.
I may not care to game like I used to, its simply not fulfilling anymore. That enjoyment traveled elsewhere and was found in little things like working on my car, which instead of paying someone for, I find that challenge enjoyable. Or gardening. There’s an amazing woman i’m talking with who’s piquing my interest of gardening. I mean in all honesty my enjoyment is found in my conversations with her but I’m sure I’ll find joy in gardening as she does.
As we change, I find our meaning of enjoyment changes too, and effects and is affected by, the many influences we experience throughout our lives.
A wonderful thing enjoyment is.
Till next time y’all. With love✌🏽
